UII Standards Laboratory Recognized by NIST for Quality
UII
is proud to announce the recent (June 30, 2004) accreditation of
our Metrology Standards Laboratory under the National
Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP). Spearheaded
by Director Rich Cozier, accreditation was the successful result
to a formidable effort including application submission, on-site
assessment, proficiency testing, and technical evaluation.
Administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST), NVLAP consists of a series of laboratory accreditation
programs (LAPs), established on the basis of requests and demonstrated
need. NVLAP provides an unbiased third-party evaluation of laboratory
performance and competence in specific calibration activities and
tests. A NVLAP accreditation is granted when NVLAP determines that
the operation is in accordance with NVLAP requirements for quality
systems; personnel; accommodation and environment; test and calibration
methods; equipment; measurement traceability; sampling; handling
of test and calibration items; and test and calibration reports.
More importantly, a NVLAP accreditation is viewed by our current
and prospective customers as a distinguished mark of quality, ensuring
compliance to key internationally recognized standards, such as
those detailed in the NIST Handbook. After meeting the requirements
of NIST Handbook 150, the UII Standards Laboratory is accredited
by NVLAP to ISO 17025:1999 and NCSL/ANSI Z540-1 and operates a
quality and management system compliant to ISO 9002:1994.
The UII Standards Laboratory is located in Springfield, VA, about
5 miles from UII Corporate Headquarters. Established in 1985 in
collaboration with the Navy's Strategic Systems Programs (SSP),
the laboratory serves the TRIDENT submarine system. Through a fee-for-use
arrangement with the Navy, the laboratory may also serve other
organizations. As the next addition to an elite group of Accredited
Laboratories, the laboratory consistently receives plaudits for
the quality of its work, communications with customers, and the
precision of its logistics efforts. Our extensive Scope of Accreditation
is available online at http://ts.nist.gov/ts/htdocs/210/214/scopes/2005970.pdf.
Congratulations to the UII Standards Laboratory staff of the MSS
Division for achieving this milestone event, demonstrating UII’s
commitment to quality and uncompromising standards.
Continued
Excellence Through UII’s Sole Source Contract
Our
customer at Strategic Systems Programs (SSP), Eli Zacharia, was
recently featured In the Jan-May 2004 Joint Navy Audit Certification
Teams (JNACT) Newsletter. In the newsletter, Mr. Zacharia is credited
with the development, organization, and implementation of the “best
Test and Measurement Equipment (T&ME) Life Cycle Support (LCS)
Program in the Navy”. As the only commercial entity recognized
in the article, UII stands alongside NSWC Corona and NSWC Crane
as a partner to Mr. Zacharia's success. The incumbent contractor for more than 25 years, UII has been
designated as the sole source contractor to provide professional,
technical, and program management support services in the areas
of calibration and T&ME Life Cycle Support. These services
are in support of the T&ME related operations managed by the
Department of the Navy’s SSP. As Calibration Data Manager
(CDM), UII has the responsibility to provide program management
support and IT services in the form of the development and maintenance
of the Master Calibration Data Base (MCDB). The MCDB is used to
collect, integrate and analyze data from program and non-program
participants to ensure data integrity and consistency. This enables
the CDM to assist SSP in providing the highest level of T&ME
Life Cycle Support. The CDM was tasked with this responsibility
when other Navy program participants either could not provide needed
data, could not provide accurate data, or could not provide data
in a timely manner.
Congratulations to Mr. Zacharia and our Metrology Support Systems
(MSS) Division in demonstrating continued excellence, dedication,
and responsiveness to SSP.
